Mystery Science Theater 3000: (Season 1): An American cult-classic has returned with Netflix's new series of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (a.k.a. MST3K). If you're not familiar with this 80s/90s show, the premise involves a janitor (played in this version by Jonah Ray) who's chosen by his bosses at the Moon-based Gizmonic Institute (played by Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt) for a very important task. Which task you ask? Well, Jonah's new job is to watch terrible movies while his mind is monitored by company bigwigs. To what purpose? No idea, but it sure is funny! Jonah, along with his robotic buddies Tom Servo, Crow and Gypsy, sit at the bottom of the screen as silhouettes that make hilarious, rapid-fire comments and observations throughout each feature-length cheesefest. Basically, it's like hanging out and watching awful, cringe-inducing films with a bunch of comedians. In short, MST3K is a terrific reason to stay in this weekend. To get an idea of what the show is like, check out this fun video Netflix released which applies the concept to the not at all terrible series, Stranger Things.

Movies
Small Crimes: A dark indie thriller from the director of Cheap Thrills, Small Crimes stars Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a disgraced former cop who returns home from a six-year prison stint to find all his old problems waiting for him. Turns out redemption is much harder than it seems. A lean, mean piece of pulp fiction with a comedic edge, Small Crimes should satisfy those looking for a break from the typical Hollywood blockbuster.

Better Call Saul (Season 3 premiere): In the third season of Better Call Saul, 'Slippin' Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) continues his moral descent as he heads towards his eventual Breaking Bad outcome, and we're loving every minute of it! This season marks the return of a Breaking Bad favourite in notorious drug kingpin and fried chicken peddler Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito). Things are bound to get out of control.

Hardcore Henry: Like an even crazier first-person version of the Crank films, Hardcore Henry is like an extremely violent video game come to life. Some people might experience nausea from this kind of cinematography, but those who can stomach it are in for a wild, action-packed ride. Best of all, the vast majority of this Russian-shot movie's death-defying stunts are all too real. Stars Sharlto Copley (District 9) as a number of comical 'NPCs'.

American Gods (Season 1): Destined to be the most talked-about new show of the year, American Gods is an adaptation of the award-winning Neil Gaiman novel of the same name. The show maintains the book's trippy, hyper-violent and sexed-up tone, upping the ante with some truly mind-blowing visuals (stand up and take a bow, Bryan Fuller and David Slade – also known as the visionary team behind the acclaimed Hannibal TV series). The story follows a man named Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) who is released from prison and immediately encounters a number of gods, demons and other mythological creatures. While there's a good chance you won't initially know what the hell is going on, it won't matter – just sit back and enjoy the wonderfully-wordy characters, most notably Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), a mysterious individual who hires Shadow to be his right-hand man. New episodes are fast-tracked from the US every Monday, but trust us – you'll want to get onboard early with this show.
